چکیده

In airborne and spaceborne radar remote sensing of clouds and precipitation, measurements of the sea surface normalized radar cross section σ are widely used to constrain and condition algorithms for the retrieval of atmospheric parameters. In the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, the Path Integrated Attenuation (PIA) of the Ku-band Preciptitation Radar (PR) are estimated by comparing the surface radar backscatter measured across a distribution of hydrometeors against the surface backscatter cross section σ clear measured in the nearby rain-free areas. The PIA is then used as a constraint in the Surface Reference Techniques (SRT) to deduce the vertical rainrate profiles and surface rain rates. A dual-frequency version of the SRT is expected to be used by the planned Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission since the Dual frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the GPM core satellite will provide co-located and simultaneous measurements of σ at Kuand Kaband.

Gpm Field Campaigns for Algorithm Physics

The Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) will employ a constellation of ~8 satellites to measure precipitation between +/-65o latitude[1]. The GPM constellation will fly microwave radiometers accompanied by a core “reference” satellite carrying a Ka-Ku band dual-frequency radar (DPR) and an improved passive microwave radiometer (GMI; frequencies 10-183 GHz). Fundamentally, the improved GPM remote...

Forward and Backscattering Measurements of Rainfall over a Path at the Gpm Frequencies

This paper describes the theoretical basis and conceptual design of a dual-frequency radar and microwave link (radar/link) system capable of measuring simultaneously forward and backscatter from rainfall. The forward and backscattering radar/link system will enable small-scale rain studies essential in understanding the rainfall process, and make significant contributions to the investigation o...

The NASA Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) System For GPM Ground Validation

Following on the successful introduction of single-frequency (Ku-Band) weather radar onboard the Tropical Rain Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite in 1997, the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission attempts to advance further the goal of making global scale precipitation observations by deploying the next generation of satellite-borne weather radars. The GPM satellite will carry a Ka-Ku...

Simulation of Space-borne Radar Observations of Precipitation at Ku and Ka Band

Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is poised to be the next generation precipitation observations from space after the TRMM mission. The GPM will carry a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR), operating at Ku and Ka band frequencies. Since space-borne precipitation observations have never been done in Ka band before, extensive research work on dualfrequency radar, including electromagnet...

Multiple scattering in observations of the GPM dual‐frequency precipitation radar: Evidence and impact on retrievals

This paper illustrates how multiple scattering signatures affect Global Precipitation Measuring (GPM) Mission Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) Ku and Ka band reflectivity measurements and how they are consistent with prelaunch assessments based on theoretical considerations and confirmed by airborne observations. In particular, in the presence of deep convection, certain characteristics...
